WEEK 8: May 19th - 22nd
CONSTRUCTED LANDSCAPES
Artist to investigate: Paula McCartney
In visual art, a "landscape" is a picture representing a view of (mostly) natural scenery. A landscape can be anything - a field of wheat, a city street, rough desert terrain, an ocean view, or the surface of the moon. Here are some examples of landscape paintings, below.
For this art challenge, you will use digital photography to create a landscape.
Watch the video to the right, which introduces artist Paula McCartney. Her artwork explores the boundaries between the natural and unnatural. For this assignment, you are going to use things you find around your house or yard, to create your own landscape. You will create a photograph which APPEARS to be a photo of the natural world. You can use anything you find around the house - they can be natural objects (dirt, sticks, rocks, etc.) and man-made or constructed objects (clothing, toys, cardboard, towels, etc.). |

INSTRUCTIONS:
- Watch the video, first.
- Gather materials to make a constructed landscape of your choosing. Remember that you can use ANYTHING to make this... but you are going to photograph it in a way that fools us (your viewers) into thinking that this is a landscape. You want to create an image that appears to be a photo of a landscape. Think about finding objects with different colours, textures, and shapes.
- Combine these things together into your "landscape". Take photos, and look at them on the screen of your phone/camera to see if you can trick your viewer into seeing something that looks like a landscape. Rearrange them, photograph them again. Re-adjust the items to your liking. Take lots of photos! Play around with the things you've collected until you have a few images you like.
- ONLY send me your TOP THREE photos.
Here are some examples of works created by FRC students!
