Conceptual Art Project

Picture
A Line Made By Walking, Richard Long, 1967
In class, we looked at the work of a number of conceptual artists.

Keeping in mind that conceptual art is centered on the “idea” or concept (and the artist's documentation of that process or of their idea) – not around the materials, or technique or craftsmanship, choose one of these assignments to complete…

You will be guided through a thinking and planning process during class. Collect everything you can related to your thinking – everything is evidence of learning.

As discussed in class, you have a number of choices of “ways of making” in this project – here are just four of them:
  • Performing Your Idea, such as Vito Accioni’s “Following Piece” or Yoko Ono’s “Cut Piece
  • Using Existing or Found Objects, such as Joseph Kosuth’s “One and Three Chairs” or Felix Gonzales-Torres’ “Untitled (Portrait of Ross in L.A.)”
  • Creating Interventions in Landscapes, such as “A Line Made By Walking” by Richard Long or “Obliteration Room” by Yayoi Kusama
  • Creating Situational Interactions like Roman Ondak’s “Measuring the Universe” or Marina Abramovic’s “The Artist is Present”

Use a camera, video camera, and/or other ways of documentation, like notetaking, charting, graphing, etc. to document the process and result of your thinking.  You will collect these photos and create an artist statement after you’re finished with the work.
