Assignment #3: ZINES (planning stages)
We are currently working on our Zine Project. We are looking at the work of Nathaniel Russell, Tauba Auerbach, Ed Fella, Dada/Fluxus Artists, Jenny Holzer, Barbara Kruger, Glenn Ligon, Bruce Nauman, Yoko Ono, Adrian Piper, Kay Rosen, Ed Ruscha, Lawrence Weiner.
Your zine can:
On your two days away from school, please plan out your zine - figure out what you will put on each of the twelve pages and sketch them out (as demonstrated in class) in your idea journal.
This can be a rough sketch - but should be drawn clearly enough that someone else can figure out what is happening on each page. (Notes might help.) This planning is due the next time I see you - on your fourth class.

Your zine can:
- Be filled with random, interesting pages of words / art about a particular theme/topic (e.g. friends, embarrassing moments, etc.)
- Be a list (e.g. "Weird Things My Dad Says" or "Objects Found in Ditches" or "What it's Like to be Filipino")
- Tell a story (narrative, sequential, with a beginning/middle/end)
- The most important thing is that it has UNITY (the whole book is about the same thing, generally)

MEMORY AND IMAGINATION: Assignment #2 (due on our third class)
Drawing from IMAGINATION often relies on an assortment of your memories. Last week we started with an observational drawing. The more you draw from observation, the stronger the connection between your memories and your ability to put them down on paper becomes. Drawing from memory is less about the accuracy of your interpretation and more about the feelings and perspectives these memories hold. Sticking to the reality and realism of memories is not important - it is more exciting to invent, add to and exaggerate aspects of your recollections. Relax and let your mind wander through some of your key memories. Think about the feelings attached to those memories and how you might be able to adapt them into a full-page drawing. Start drawing whatever images and pictures come to mind. You can either be faithful to your memory and draw it exactly as you remember it, or you can add details, people, imaginary things or objects to your scene. For this Learning From Home assignment, create one full-page drawing (dry media only; pencil, pen/ink or coloured pencil) based on an important memory of yours. This must be completed in your idea journal (sketchbook). It should take two hours or more to complete, and is due at our next in-person class. :) |
Assignment #1: OBSERVATIONAL DRAWING (due on our second class)
On the "Some Ideas to Keep You Moving" Handout (given out in class), please choose ONE of the items from the "Observational Drawing" list to complete. You should spend between 1.5 - 2 hours on this one item. Remember that for this particular list, I want you to draw from REAL LIFE - not from a photograph. Sit somewhere that you can SEE the thing, person, or landscape you've chosen to draw, and draw it. This can be done in any 2D medium you choose. (A "medium" is the term we use to refer to the materials an artist uses: graphite pencil, coloured pencil, regular pen, watercolour, etc. (Please choose a medium that is good for recording detail.) |
