ART 40G/S:  Conceptual Art

For this project, you need to understand the difference between two new words:

Aesthetic: related to visual appearance or beauty

Conceptual:
related to the thinking, or ideas

For example, an aesthetician's job is to make people beautiful (apply makeup, style hair, do manicures/pedicures, etc.).  A philosopher does conceptual work; he works with ideas.

FIRST:

Plug in your headphones… and watch the video called “All You Need to Know about Conceptual Art”, below. After you are done, answer the questions about the video, below it.

Questions

Cut and paste these questions into a Word Document, and answer them all.  Save the document and then print it out (and hand it in) or email it to me at dknight@pembinatrails.ca.

1. What, according to the video, is the “single biggest art idea of the 20th century”?

2. Do you think that the artist Marcel Duchamp was a great artistic revolutionary?  Or just an ingenious prankster trying to pull a “fast one” on the art world?

Now, read through the handout given out in class (CONCEPTUAL ART).  think about the slideshow we watched in class.

Your next few idea journal assignments will be conceptual art assignments...  :)
