Altered Books
Grade 11 and 12 students were asked to give 'new life' to some old discarded library books which were weeded from our school library. With the end of high school coming near, they were asked to work within the theme of NEW BEGINNINGS - to reflect on their lives as they are and also to begin thinking about the future. Students were asked to respond visually (in a variety of media) to a few different prompts. For example:
- Illustrate your most embarrassing moment so far - something that you cringe every time you think of. What would you like to bury in this book forever?
- If you could write a letter now to yourself when you were ten, to pass down some advice - what would you say? What's most important to remember as you grow up?
- If you could choose one song to be your power anthem... what would it be?
- Cut out about 30 words from a magazine. Play around with rearranging them to create a found poem from most of the words you've found.
- If you had to choose a "mantra" - a phrase or saying you found (or wrote yourself) - to keep as a focus as you move on after graduation, what would it be?
- What is "trash" in your life (things you want to change / get rid of / change) and what is "treasure" (things you value / appreciate / and want to stay the same)?
